The surroundings of Lacapelle-Livron

La Barrière is found near the tiny village of Lacapelle-Livron, in the Tarn et Garonne. The nearby medieval village of Caylus, 4 kilometers away, has many facilities that residents and holiday-makers require: a good garage, a bank, a post office, restaurants, food shops, and two street markets a week. Housebuilders can find most of their required materials nearby and there are good local artisans in masonry, plumbing and electrical services. Tourism is naturally important to the local economy but the number of visitors is on a modest scale, short-lived, and not disruptive.

La Barrière is ideally placed at the centre of a number of very different and fascinating regions. To the North is the Lot Valley with its wide, beautiful river flowing past memorable hill-top villages and close to the spectacular prehistoric caves of Peche Merle.

To the East is the wild wooded countryside of the Aveyron Gorges. Further South-east you are entering ‘Cathar’ country, the cathederal city of Albi and the awesome ravines of the Tarn Gorges.

To the South, within an hour, you are in the rolling hills of the Gaillac vinyards and the forest of Gresigne. A little further and you come to the vibrant cities of Toulouse and Carcassonne. The holiday traffic that these beauty spots rightly attract by-passes Lacapelle.

If you are interested in history, art, natural history or gardening this area has inexhaustible resources.

St Antonin Noble Val perhaps deserves particular mention. This medieval village on the banks of the Aveyron is 14 kilometers from La Barrière. Its Sunday morning market is outstanding for local produce and draws producers and shoppers from miles around. It has recently become internationally recognizable through two acclaimed films – The One-hundred-foot Journey (Helen Mirren) and Charlotte Gray (Cate Blanchett), some of which was shot in Lacapelle-Livron.

Access to the international airports of Rodez and Toulouse is simple, reliable and within a drive of one and a quarter hours.

We have had the best years of our lives here. La Barrière needs new and younger hearts, minds and bodies and that is why we are now happy to pass the baton.
